$1 Million Powerball Ticket Sold In PA Remains Unclaimed

Unclaimed PA Powerball Lottery Ticket

Check your old Powerball tickets — somebody in Pennsylvania may be a (near) instant millionaire. A winning Powerball lottery ticket sold in Philadelphia on June 24th, 2017 has yet to be claimed according to the PA Lottery.

If the winner fails to come forward by June 24th, 2018 — one week from now — they will forfeit the $1 million dollar prize.

While the time frame to claim a Powerball prize varies from 90 days to 1 year — depending on the jurisdiction the ticket is sold — in Pennsylvania, a winner must claim their prize within 1 year of the drawing.

Complete Powerball rules for the state of Pennsylvania are available on palottery.com.

About the winning Powerball Ticket

Purchased nearly a year ago, the ticket was sold at the 5th Street Variety Store located on 6013 N. 5th Street in Philadelphia.

The winning ticket matched the five white balls drawn, failing only to hit the Powerball number. Hitting five white numbers in a single drawing is good for a $1 million prize.

The PA Lottery winnings numbers for the Powerball that night were 10, 22, 32, 36 and 58. The Powerball number was 10 and was not hit.

In addition to claiming the prize before the 24th, the lottery winner will need to sign their ticket and reach out to a nearby Pennsylvania Lottery office.

All will not go to waste if the lottery ticket goes unclaimed, however. Despite the Powerball winner forfeiting their prize, any expired lottery prizes stay in the PA Lottery Fund to aid programs benefiting older Pennsylvanians.

Lottery players can check PA Lottery results at retailers using self-serve scanners. A ticket checker is also available on the Lottery website and official app.

How many Powerball prizes go left unclaimed?

A quick search of the internet reveals that unclaimed lottery tickets are more common than you would think.

Of course, most of these unclaimed winners are smaller prizes. Many of the lottery winners with $1 or $2 wins may not even bother cashing in their ticket.

Occasionally a big one will be forgotten.

The largest unclaimed lottery prize in the United States is believed to be $68 million from a Mega Millions drawing in 2002, won by an unfortunate player in New York. Other unclaimed prizes of $31 million and $46 million were also left unclaimed in Mega Millions drawings in and around New York during the 2000s.

At this point, it is probably a good thing these lottery winners never hear about their fortune and subsequent misfortune. At least they won’t have to pay taxes on those winnings.
