A Report Of The Opening Week Of The 2021 Philadelphia Phillies Season

Philadelphia Phillies Opening Week

Welcome to our weekly  look at the Philadelphia Phillies after the first week of the season. All season, we’ll catch you up on the action for each week, discuss team trends, and track player movement/performance.

As of now, the Phillies are technically the best team in baseball (5-1). Though the Reds and Astros are both 5-1, the Phillies have done it against the Braves and Mets, while the Reds and Astros haven’t played competition on the same level. Regardless, the Phillies are off to an incredible start, while their biggest threat in the division is already three games back.

How it happened

The Phillies have been winning some really exciting games. Connor Brogdan has emerged as the team’s lucky rabbit’s foot out of the bullpen (3 of the team’s 5 wins). Aaron Nola is back in the ace role this season, while Zack Wheeler had a tremendous 2021 debut (10 Ks over 7 innings). Rhys Hoskins is off to a great start (.417 BA) as he’s been notably more aggressive at the plate to start the season.

Bryce Harper is off to a bit of a quiet start, but he’s managed a .462 OBP and six walks through the first week. Alec Bohm got a lot of attention in 2020, coming up during the shortened season to hit .338. He hit the eventual game winner against the Braves, and hit an impressive bomb in the 8-2 win over the Mets.

Philadelphia will spend the next week running it back with away series’ against both the Mets and Braves. With all the excitement wrapped around the opening week, there are some promising young players and exciting prospects on the horizon.

For 2021, the list is short. We should see Spencer Howard at some point (possibly after the All-Star break). Howard is a prototypical power righty, standing 6’3 and featuring a 94-mph fastball. He has a four-pitch arsenal and could offer the Phillies a solid middle relief option or back end of the rotation option by the start of the postseason.

Adonis Medina and Damon Jones could also potentially help the pitching staff in 2021 as well, so keep an eye out for them too.

Chicago White Sox to win American League +400

The White Sox are even more stacked now than the team who won the 2005. Their rotation is talented (albeit a little top-heavy). The lineup is stacked, even without Eloy Jimenez for most of this season. This club is bursting at the seams with talent and have a few top prospects waiting in case of injury.

They also have another top pitching prospect (Garrett Crochet) who could work himself into the rotation alongside Michael Kopech. With Lynn and Giolito leading the current rotation, the White Sox would pose a very formidable threat to anyone in the American League in a playoff series. I like the talent and love the odds.
