What does Hollywood Penn National have to offer?

This “racino” is located somewhat centrally in Pennsylvania, close to Harrisburg and Hershey and has a longer history as a race track than as a casino. Penn National Race Course opened in the summer of 1972. The addition of Hollywood Casino came much later, in 2008, four years after slot machine gaming became legal in the state. Vegas-style table games were added in 2010 as that form of gambling was made legal.

Featuring 24/7 gaming and racing action 365 days a year (simulcast races from across the country are available when live racing is dark), Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course is a popular place for Pennsylvanians to play. The property also has several options for dining and drinking, however the nighttime entertainment is relatively sparse. Also, there is no hotel on property so overnight guests will have to make arrangements to stay at one of several hotels nearby.

The most obvious gaming choice available is horse race betting and there’s plenty of action there. With the addition of the Vegas-style casino there are even more options. Hollywood Casino has over 2,450 slot and video poker machines to choose from. They also have a good selection of table games (although not quite as many tables as other Pennsylvania casinos of this size) and a medium sized poker room.

Let’s take a look at each of these in detail.

Table games

Hollywood Casino has 56 gaming tables, which is relatively low for a Pennsylvania casino compared to the number of slot/video poker machines they have. Despite this, they have a solid offering of game types. Where the low number of tables hurts customers is in the variety of limits available. When the casino is busy, lower limit gamblers might not be able to find action at stakes they find agreeable. On busy days, $15 or $25 table minimum games are all that can be found on the casino floor.

Here’s the table games Hollywood Casino has to offer:

  • Blackjack (featuring the Lucky Ladies side bet)
  • Craps
  • Roulette
  • Four Card Poker
  • Three Card Poker
  • Fortune Pai Gow Poker
  • High Card Flush
  • Ultimate Texas Hold’em
  • Let It Ride
  • Spanish 21
  • Baccarat (mini)
  • Big Six Wheel
  • Cajun Stud

If slot machines are your thing, Hollywood Casino won’t let you down. The property has over 2,100 different machines to choose from, with limits ranging from penny slots to $100/spin monsters. Unfortunately, there is no separate high-limit section for higher stakes players.

Here’s just a few of the slot machines Hollywood Casino has to offer:

  • Gold Rush
  • Goldfish
  • Leprechaun’s Gold
  • Monopoly
  • Penny Barn
  • Poseidon
  • Sphinx 3D
  • The Price is Right
  • The Walking Dead

…and many many more.

Video Poker

While not as numerous as their slot machines, Hollywood Casino’s 360 video poker machines are still a sizable offering. There are a wide variety of types and limits available, but here are some of their notable video poker options in detail:

The poker room

The Hollywood Casino 17 table poker room may not be large but it gets action due to being the only poker room in the Hershey/Harrisburg area. Games spread are Texas Hold’em, Omaha (high and hi/lo), Seven card stud, and various mixed games. For convenience, players can call ahead (up to 30 minutes) to be placed on the waiting list. That number is also the main casino number: (717)469-2211 – choose option 9.

The poker room offers a bad-beat jackpot on its Hold’em games as well as a regular high hand promotion and various other promotions throughout the year. Additionally, the room spreads daily and other scheduled tournaments.

Horse Racing

Finally, let’s talk about this property’s claim to fame – the racetrack. Penn National Race course is one of only a handful of tracks in the country to offer live horse racing year-round. Also, the track is home to several prestigious races including the Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup, the Pennsylvania Mile, and the Fabulous Strike Handicap.

Races are usually held at night (beginning at 6pm). Race nights are every Thursday through Saturday (and some Wednesdays). There are also afternoon races on Mother’s Day. In addition to betting on live races, gamblers also have access to betting on simulcast races from across the country.

The Marquee Rewards Program

As a Penn National Gaming property, Hollywood Casino uses the card-based Marquee Rewards player reward program. Signing up for a card is free at the casino service desk. With the card, players earn rewards on slot, video poker, and table game play. These rewards can be redeemed at Hollywood Casino or at any of over 20 other Penn National Gaming properties around the country, including the Tropicana and the M casinos in Las Vegas.

Marquee Rewards is a tier-based program with five levels. Tier status is determined by the number of points earned by the player in six month increments: January-June and July-December. Here are the point requirements per level:

  • Marquee: below 9,999 points
  • Celebrity: 10,000-29,999 points
  • Producer: 30,000-124,999 points
  • Executive Producer: 125,000-399,999 points
  • Icon: 400,000 and above

Marquee Rewards players of all levels have access to free slot play, sweepstakes offers, discounted dining and hotel offers and invitations to special events and other promotions. The amount and value of each of these depends on how much and how often the player plays.

In addition, players at the Celebrity tier and above can take advantage of discounted rates at Norwegian Cruise Line. Players at the Producer tier and above receive priority access at select restaurants and player services.

Players who achieve the highest two tiers (Executive Producer and Icon) also receive the following benefits:

  • A personal host
  • Preferred parking and free valet parking
  • VIP lounge access for the player and a guest
  • Two free Norwegian Cruise Line cruises (up to 7 days each) annually
  • An annual renewal gift

Players who achieve the Icon tier also receive:

  • An annual celebration dinner
  • Annual $500 airfare reimbursement towards a cruise or casino trip
  • Free annual three-night trip to any Marquee Rewards Casino (plus a $250 dining credit)

Online gaming

As of August, 2018, Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course hasn’t entered Pennsylvania’s nascent online gaming market but it will do so soon. They have already applied for one of the state’s $10 million licenses allowing operators to offer online table games, slots, and peer-to-peer gaming (geek-speak for online poker). It is expected that they will partner with Scientific Games to run their online slots and table games. How they will handle their online poker tech needs is unknown at this time.

Pennsylvanian’s eager to gamble online in the meanwhile should consider giving Pennsylvania’s online lottery a try. The games are fun and easy to play and you can win real money. Even better, new players receive $5 free to play when they sign up.

Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course offers a wide variety of dining options, from fine dining to quick and casual and everything in between. Here’s what’s available:

Well, in this area, the pickings are somewhat slim at Hollywood Casino. They have a live music venue called H Lounge and well… that’s about it.

Since they have no hotel on property, visitors who plan on staying overnight should seek accommodations at nearby hotels, the closest of which are located in Grantville, one or two miles away from the casino. Hotels here include:

  • Holiday Inn
  • Hampton Inn
  • MainStay Suites
  • Comfort Suites
  • Days Inn

There are also more hotels located in nearby Harrisburg (about four miles away) and Hershey (about seven miles away). For visitors interested in exploring Hershey, PA and wanting something more than a standard hotel room, Hotel Hershey gets very good reviews.
