What does Lady Luck have to offer?

The Lady Luck is the casino attached to the beautiful and luxurious Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, located 40 miles south of Pittsburgh in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Unlike most other casinos in the state, the Lady Luck is one of only two that were licensed to operate in locations with (and as a part of) existing hotel resorts. As such, the Lady Luck must operate with license restrictions that make it different than other Pennsylvania casinos. These are:

  • There can be a maximum of 600 slot machines and 50 table games.
  • Casino access is restricted to members of the resort, resort guests, those attending a conference or private function at the resort, or those who have purchased (in the same day) $10 or more in resort amenities.

The second restriction is more of a nuisance, as visitors can satisfy this requirement by buying $10 worth of anything at any resort restaurant or the gift shop.

A resort casino

Since the Lady Luck is one of Pennsylvania’s two “resort casinos” and as such is smaller and more restricted than other PA casinos, it makes sense to describe the amenities of the resort itself before diving into the details of the casino. After all, very few people will come all this way just to play in the relatively small casino.

The Nemacolin Resort is situated on 2,000 acres in the Laurel Highlands area of southern Pennsylvania. The resort first opened in 1987 and has expanded considerably since that time. The casino didn’t open until the summer of 2013. Currently the resort boasts a panoply of amenities including:

The above attractions are but a taste of what visitors can expect from this Five Diamond resort. Visitors planning on coming to Nemacolin would be well advised to consider booking their stay using seasonal specials or packages that bundle lodging together with one or more of the resort’s amenities (golf, spa, activities). Given the high price tag a resort of this caliber commands, the savings resulting from such an approach can be appreciable.

Dining at Nemacolin Resort

Dining options at Nemacolin range from elegant and refined to quick and casual and everything in between. Here’s a brief description of what you will find here:

In addition to the largest public wine cellar in Pennsylvania and the top-quality spirits available in its restaurant collection, Nemacolin also features six bars and lounges (eight, counting The Tavern and Otis & Henry’s above) to accommodate their guests. Here’s the rundown:

  • The Bar at Rockwell’s – Known for it’s hand-crafted cocktails, locally brewed beers, and robust selection of whiskeys.
  • The Lone Wolf – This bar is located inside the Lady Luck casino, offering up hot food, cool drinks, a dance floor, and nighttime entertainment.
  • Amber Bar – This bar is located in the lobby area of Falling Rock boutique hotel. Perfect for meeting friends and socializing before or after dinner.

  • Cigar Bar – Harkening back to the roaring Twenties, this speak-easy style bar features doorways that blend into the walls, rich wood, leather chairs, a fireplace, and bartenders in attire reminiscent of the era serving the finest bourbons, scotches, cognacs and Prohibition-style cocktails along with the best wines and beers around.
  • Tea Lounge – For guests pining for “the old world”, the elegant afternoon tea service provided here is ideal.

The Lady Luck casino

Now that we’ve described the main reason for coming to Nemacolin (the resort), let’s finally turn our attention to the Lady Luck casino itself and what it offers.

The casino is small, with just 27 table games and 600 slot, video poker, and keno machines. Despite this, they’ve made room for a high limit section. This seems appropriate, given that the pricey nature of the resort is going to lend itself to a “higher rolling” clientele and keep many smaller limit players away.

There is no poker room at Lady Luck. Again, this seems appropriate. Without a stable pool of local players, it’s almost impossible to keep a poker room operational and it doesn’t make sense to staff and equip one just for tourist traffic.

Despite these drawbacks, the casino does offer promotions designed to attract patrons. Visitors should check these out before they come and be sure to take advantage of them while they are here.

Table gaming

Lady Luck operates 27 table games. That’s not many, but they do the best they can with what they have, offering a relatively impressive array of the most popular table games and blackjack side bets. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Blackjack (featuring the 21+3, IN BETween, and House Money side bets as well as the Blazing 7’s progressive side bets)
  • Craps
  • Roulette
  • Casino War
  • Three Card Poker (featuring a progressive side bet)
  • Four Card Poker
  • Mississippi Stud
  • Criss Cross Poker
  • Ultimate Texas Hold’em

In addition, Lady Luck operates an additional progressive jackpot for its linked carnival games.

Slots, video poker, and keno

Lady Luck casino may only have 600 machines, but they pack as much into them as anyone could expect. Lady luck stocks the most popular slot, video poker, and keno games, with limits ranging from penny and nickle machines to those with higher limits.

The My Fan Club player reward system

Lady Luck casino is operated by St. Louis based Isle of Capri and as such, uses their My Fan Club player rewards system. It is free to join and members earn points for their slot machine and table games play. Simply insert the card into your machine before playing and hand your card to the dealer before playing table games.

Every 5,000 points earned by the player can be redeemed for either $10 in food/beverage comps, $5 free play, or $2.50 cash or resort credit. Additionally, points earned here can be combined with those earned at other Isle of Capri properties, excluding the Isle Casino at Pompano Park.

Lady Luck is however, running an online play money site (operated by Scientific Games) called Play Eldorado. Players can play authentic Vegas-style games online using virtual credits (players get 50,000 free credits when they join). Players can never cash out their winnings, but those winnings can be used to unlock more games and allow the player to keep playing. Additionally, players can purchase additional virtual credits to keep playing when they run out.
