What does Presque Isle Downs & Casino have to offer?

Presque Isle, one of the state’s six “racinos” is located in Erie, Pennylvania, on the shores of Lake Erie. By car, it is two hours north of Pittsburgh, 90 minutes east of Cleveland, and 90 minutes west of Buffalo.

The property has no on-site hotel, but there are several nearby. Also nearby are several local attractions that, along with the racetrack and casino, make the area a nice place to visit for a family vacation. Specifically, Presque Isle is located near the Millcreek Mall and the Station Dinner Theater. In addition, the Erie Zoo and Presque Isle State Park are located nearby along with two water parks, Splash Lagoon and Waldameer Water World.

The history of the other five Pennsylvania racinos is that the track came first, then a casino was added once the state legalized first slots, then table gaming in the 2000’s. Presque Isle is different. Here the casino came first, opening in February of 2007 and offering first slots, then table games when those were made legal in 2010. The track was added in September of 2007, replacing another previously unsuccessful racetrack called Erie Downs.

Presque Isle is one of Pennsylvania’s smaller casino offerings, with 1,500 slots, 42 table games, and a small poker room. Of course there is also the thoroughbred racetrack, offering live racing half the year and simulcast races year round.

Presque Isle has been losing business in recent years due to competition from casinos that have opened in next-door Ohio. This competition could be good for players, though. Presque Isle is always offering promotions to entice players to visit.

Gaming

Again, Presque Isle’s gaming offerings aren’t as numerous as some other Pennsylvania operators, but they do have all the most popular games and machines one would expect from a Vegas-style casino, just not quite as many. Despite this, they do have a separate high limit room for the comfort and enjoyment of their high rollers.

Table gaming

Due to the somewhat limited space, smaller limit players at Presque Isle might find their options restricted on busy nights and weekends, as tables fill up and table minimums are increased. Part of the problem here is the casino is still offering a solid assortment of the most popular games. When space is limited, variety of game can squeeze out variety of limits. Here’s a list of Presque Isle’s table games:

  • Craps
  • Roulette
  • Blackjack (featuring the Lucky Ladies, 21+3, and IN BETween side bets as well as the Blazing 7’s side bet with a progressive jackpot)
  • Three Card Poker
  • Ultimate Texas Hold’em
  • Let It Ride
  • Spanish 21
  • Mississippi Stud

Slots

Despite having fewer slot machines than some of Pennsylvania’s other casinos, Presque Isle does still have over 1,500 of them, which isn’t a tiny amount by any stretch. Machine players should have no problem finding their favorite reel, video or progressive slot machine offerings, with limits ranging from penny machines to those that allow wagers as high as $100/spin.

One nice feature of Presque Isle’s slot machine area is the large amount of progressive slots on offer. Also a plus: many of these progressives are at the lower betting limits, giving smaller players a chance to hit it big. Here’s some of their progressive slot variants:

  • One Cent Quick Hits Progressives
  • Two Cent Hot Slots Progressives
  • Five Cent Double Diamond Progressives
  • $1 Double Dollars Progressives
  • $1 Big Al’s Progressives

Poker room

The poker room at Presque Isle is on the small side, but they are quite active. No Limit Hold’em and Omaha/8 cash games are spread regularly. There are also a wide variety of weekly and monthly tournaments.

Additionally, the room runs regular promotions including high-hand contests for tickets to drawings and give-aways.

The racetrack

The racetrack at Presque Isle runs its live racing season from mid-May through early October. It is a thoroughbred track, and unlike most others in the country, runs its races starting at 5:25pm  rather than in the afternoon. Most race evenings consist of eight races.

In addition, the track has simulcast races from across the country, so bettors will have no problem getting action from their favorite track.

The One Club player rewards system

Presque Isle uses a card-based player rewards system called One Club. It has five tiers, each conferring certain benefits and perks. New players can pick up a card for free when they sign up at the player’s club booth in the casino. Simply insert your card into a machine when playing, or hand your card to the dealer when playing table games.

Players earn points that can be accumulated and used to purchase food, beverages or merchandise at any Presque Isle restaurant, bar, or gift shop. Additionally, points can be converted into free play. Reward dollars are valid for 12 months after the day they have been earned.

One Club tier levels

  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • President
  • Chairman

Players at all levels earn reward dollars while playing and receive offers in the mail based on the level of their play. At the Silver level and beyond, players also receive additional benefits including:

  • Bonus entries into drawings
  • Discounts for the buffet and gift shop purchases

Players at the Gold, Producer, and Chairman levels also receive:

  • One, two or three complimentary beverages daily (depending on level)

  • Priority parking

  • Complimentary dinner for two at LBV Steak & Pasta every three months
  • Daily complimentary lunch buffet for two or dinner buffet for one

Online gaming

As of August, 2018, Presque Isle has yet to enter Pennsylvania’s nascent online gaming market. In fact, they haven’t even thrown their hat into the ring. Nine of their fellow Pennsylvania casino operators have paid $10 million for the state license that allows them to offer online slots, table games, and peer-to-peer gaming (geek-speak for online poker). If Presque Isle were to enter this space, they would probably use the tech gaming services of SBTech, but it is currently unknown if they are interested in pursuing this potentially lucrative avenue.

For those Pennsylvanian’s who want to gamble online in the meantime, they should consider Pennsylvania’s online lottery. It’s quick, easy, fun, legal, and you can win real money playing it. Even better, new players get $5 free to play when they sign up.

Dining

Presque Isle is a smaller casino, and their dining options reflect this. Players here won’t go hungry by any stretch, but the options are somewhat limited, focusing on casual rather than high-end dining.

Here’s what’s available to eat at Presque Isle:

  • LBV Steak & Pasta – Open for dinner Tue-Sat, this moderately priced restaurant focuses on steaks and Italian cuisine.
  • Brew Brothers – Open daily for lunch and dinner, this brew pub focuses on burgers, pizzas, and comfort foods, and has a wide selection of beers including specialty craft brews.
  • Backstretch Buffet – Open daily for lunch and dinner, this buffet features a wide variety of options, with specialty offerings on the weekends. One Club cardholders receive $1, $2, $3, or $4 dollars off with a Silver, Gold, President, or Chairman card.
  • InCafe – Open 24/7 for a quick and casual meal any time you need it.

Nightlife and Entertainment

For nightlife, Presque Isle has basically one option, Brew Brothers. As well as being the place on property to view sports, Brew Brothers also has live entertainment featuring the best local acts.
